Joker. 2019, Starring
Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck / Joker:
A mentally ill, impoverished stand-up comedian disregarded by society,[9] whose history of abuse causes him to become a nihilistic criminal.[10] Phoenix had been interested in a low-budget "character study" of a comic book character, and said the film "feels unique, it is its own world in some ways, and maybe [...] It might as well be the thing that scares you the most."[11] Phoenix lost 52 pounds (24 kg) in preparation,[12][13] and based his laugh on "videos of people suffering from pathological laughter."[14] He also sought to portray a character who audiences could not identify with and did not look to previous Joker actors for inspiration; instead, he read a book about political assassinations so he could understand killers and motivations.[10] Director Todd Phillips said that he intentionally left it ambiguous as to whether Arthur becomes the actual Joker as seen in traditional Batman stories or inspires a separate character,[15] although Phoenix believes that Arthur is the former.[16]
Robert De Niro as Murray Franklin:[17]
A talk show host who plays a role in Arthur's downfall.[18] De Niro said his role in Joker pays homage to his character from The King of Comedy (1983), Rupert Pupkin, who is a comedian obsessed with a talk-show host.[17]
Zazie Beetz as Sophie Dumond:[19]
A cynical single mother and Arthur's "love interest".[19][20] Beetz, a "huge fan" of Phoenix, said that it was "an honor" to co-star with him,[21] and that she learned a lot working with him on set.[22]
Frances Conroy as Penny Fleck:
Arthur's mentally and physically ill mother,[23] who formerly worked for Thomas Wayne.[24] Hannah Gross portrays a young Penny.[25]
Additionally, Brett Cullen plays Thomas Wayne, a billionaire running for mayor of Gotham.[26] Unlike in the comics, Thomas plays a role in the Joker's origins and is less sympathetic than traditional incarnations.[27] Alec Baldwin was initially cast in the role but dropped out due to scheduling conflicts.[28][29] Carrie Louise Putrello portrays Thomas's wife Martha, although the character has no lines nor is referred to by name.[30] Douglas Hodge plays Alfred Pennyworth, the butler and caretaker of the Wayne family,[31] and Dante Pereira-Olson plays Bruce Wayne, Thomas' son, who becomes the Joker's archenemy Batman as an adult.[32][33] Although Batman himself does not appear in Joker, it ends with the murder of Thomas and Martha, which in the comics inspires Bruce to take on the Batman persona.[34]
Additional cast members include: Glenn Fleshler and Leigh Gill as Randall and Gary, Arthur's clown co-workers;[35][36] Bill Camp and Shea Whigham as detectives Garrity and Burke in the Gotham City Police Department;[37] Marc Maron as Gene Ufland, a producer on Franklin's show;[38][39] Josh Pais as Hoyt Vaughn, Arthur's agent;[35][40] Brian Tyree Henry as a clerk at Arkham State Hospital;[41] Ben Warheit, Michael Benz, and Carl Lundstedt as bankers who harass Arthur;[42] Gary Gulman as a comedian;[43] and Bryan Callen as Javier, a co-worker of Arthur.[44] Justin Theroux has an uncredited cameo as Ethan Chase, a celebrity guest on Franklin's show.

Under license from Universal Music Enterprises. Anachronisms: 1. This film takes place in 1981. The Energizer Bunny is shown in TV advertisements, but in real life, the mascot was not introduced until 1988. 2. As the police car pulls out of the studio and makes a turn, an empty NYC Citi bikeshare rack can be seen on the right side. 3. Set in 1981, there is an Kellogg's ad playing with Keanu Reeves on a TV/digital billboard. This ad did not come out until 1987. 4. The ambulance that hits the squad car is a 4th generation Ford Econoline, that came out in 1992. 5. When Arthur is taking a smoke break outside the hospital and the detectives confront him, he gets up and tries to re-enter the hospital, but the automatic door doesn't open. Arthur waves frantically at the motion sensor atop the door trying to get it to open. However, motion-sensing automatic doors were extremely uncommon in 1981; the older bottom mat weight sensor-based "supermarket door" style would have been prevalent for automatic doors. 6. Kenny's music has a window full of 2018 D'Angelico guitars. 7. A sign in a shop window declares "Cell phones fixed here". Cell phones did not exist in 1981. The earliest cell phones were introduced in 1983 and it would be several more years before such signs became commonplace. 8. Set in 1981, the ambulance that strikes the police car containing the Joker is built using a Ford E-Series 1992 model or later chassis. 9. Contemporary era toys and dolls, not introduced until well after 1981, can be seen in the Children's Hospital room. 10. In one scene a BMW 3-series (E30 model) is shown parked along the street. The E30 was first introduced in the U.S. in 1984, three years after the film's 1981 setting. 11. Tactile paving slabs can be seen at a pedestrian crossing near the bank that Joker follows Sophie to, but this system wasn't introduced to the US until the 1990s. 12. The car that almost hit the Joker as he was chasing the teenagers was a 1989 Caprice. 13. In the ambulance scene you can hear, very faintly, the chirp associated with a trunked radio system. This kind of dispatch was not in use even in major metropolitan areas until at least the late '80s or early '90s. 14. In a scene in the metro hallway, the posters of 2018 movies and series can be seen. However, the movie takes place in 1981. 15. In the beginning, Arthur is seen flipping his advertising sign, but this style of use did not come about until the 2000s. 16. In the Children's Hospital, there is a medical cart that is color coded behind Arthur. This color coding is aligned with a Broselow Tape which is used in pediatric emergencies. The tape, which was first produced in 1985 for mass use, is placed next to a pediatric patient and the size of the patient from head to toe is in a weight based colored box. This box has written information about medication dosages and equipment sizes. The cart is colored to match this tape. 17. A 1986 Chrysler LeBaron Convertible can be seen parked up.

While pitching his racing idea, in 1963, Lee Iacocca notes that James Bond does not drive a Ford and shows a photo of Sean Connery next to an Aston Martin DB5. However, James Bond did not acquire the Aston Martin until Goldfinger. 2. When Shelby and Miles are brawling across the street from the Miles home, among the scattered groceries one can clearly see a loaf of Wonder Bread Classic. Classics are intended for nostalgia appeal, something from the old days-- but this IS the old days! Wonder Bread was just Wonder Bread in the 60s, and wasn't labeled 'Classic' until the 21st century. 3. When Ken Miles is at Le Mans in 1966, Mollie Miles talks with her husband using a telephone handset with a modular jack. Phone companies did not use these jacks until the 1970s and 1980s. 4. Trackside catch fencing was not in use at Le Mans in 1966, as shown in the film. 5. The sunglasses Matt Damons character wears throughout most of the movie are made by "Entourage of 7", their logo clearly visible on the temples. While the style of glasses is accurate for the period, this brand was only founded in 2007. 7. Many of the California license plates were shown in a three-number, then three-letter, format. California did not have plates in that format until about 1970, when they had exhausted the 1963 format of three-letter, three-number. 8. At the night portion of the 24 hour race, Daytona appeared to have modern LED floodlights with modern high capacity grandstands. Daytona did not have floodlighting until the late 1990s, therefore the races would had took place in the dark, unlit except at the pits. 9. Usual to any 24 hour endurance races, grandstands tends to be sparse at night and Daytona's grandstands were much smaller to how it is now. 10. Early in the movie (1964-ish?), in Ken Miles' shop, an MG can be clearly seen shod with Kumho branded tires. The company was actually named Samyang Tire until 1966. Kumho tires weren't imported into the United States until many years later, although they had ties with the US market and DOT certification. 11. When we first encounter Carroll Shelby and Ken Miles at Willow Springs (circa 1964), the song "Don't Bring Me Down" by the Animals is playing. It wasn't released for another two years on May 21, 1966, about a month before the 1966 Le Mans race. 12. Mollie Miles tries to extract information from her husband, Ken, about why he was meeting up with Carroll Shelby behind her back when she had no idea of the Ford prototype he was rating with Shelby in 1964. She does this by driving recklessly to scare him. One of the cars she passes while doing so is a '65 / '66 Chrysler. 13. Shelby's Los Angeles International Airport facility is shown in 1965, 1966, and 1967. The Mustangs in the shop are always 1965 GT350s. 14. Daytona did not have SAFER barriers until the early 2000's. 15. Lee Iacocca's presentation to Henry Ford II to make an approach to Ferrari in 1963 has references to James Bond, as per an earlier reviewer here. One of the slides in the presentation shows Sean Connery standing next to the Aston Martin DB5 that made its first showing in Goldfinger, which was not released until 1964. The next slide from Iacocca's material has a Bond still from Thunderball, which premiered in 1965. 16. The theme to the second season of "I Dream Of Jeannie" is being played on the TV in the Miles family home when Ken Miles starts testing the Ford GT40 for its first (unsuccessful) crack at Le Mans in the summer of 1965. However, the second season only made its debut in autumn/fall 1966. 17. A Lockheed L-1011 TriStar can be seen in the background. It was not introduced until April 26, 1972 with Eastern Air Lines being its first customer. 18. Although talks between Enzo Ferrari and Lee Iacocca collapsed in May 1963, the Italian photographer (Ottavio Taddei) is seen taking photos of the men using a Nikon F camera with a through-the-lens light meter, either a Nikon Tn or FTn model. Nikon respectively introduced these models in 1965 and 1968. 19. When Mrs. Miles is talking to Ken on the phone, the receiver clearly has a modular jack connecting the cord. Modular jacks did not start to appear on telephones until 1972. 20. When Ford II and Shelby came to visit the Ferrari factory, this would have been in early 1963. Several models did not become available until a few years after that. This includes the 1964 275 GTB, parked outside the factory; the 1966 330 P3, that we later see in the film and the 1965 Dino 206 S, both parked in the factory floor. 21. At about 1:44, Ken Miles passes in front of an ABC TV camera. While it appears to be a contemporary color TV camera with a zoom lens, it's actually a early 1950's black and white RCA TK-11 / 31 with a fancy paint job and a fake zoom lens covering the lens turret. 22. Several of the Shelby Cobras and Daytona's have large diameter custom wheels which weren't made until the 2000's. 23. During Lee Iaccoca's presentation to Henry Ford II to approach Ferrari in 1963, ad layouts for the full size '65 Fords may be seen on one wall of the meeting room. No ad agency would be allowed access to new models more than a year from release. 24. Towards the closing part of the race, Miles can be shown passing a #35 blue w/ white stripes Porsche 911 S, featuring wipers, American spec headlights, and sidelights which featured in models 1968 onward. 25. The actual car was in fact red with Stuttgart plates with large horn grilles like in earlier models, unlike the movie car. 26. When Miles and Shelby are wrestling in the park it shows young trees attached to plant stakes with stretchable PVC tape. The first patent for that tape was filed in 1994. 27. In the first race at Riverside; the Washburn Chevrolet #614XP Corvette Sting Ray coupe, driven in real life by Bob Bondurant, features a 427 Big Block hood scoop, not offered on Corvette Sting Rays until 1967. 28. The car was missing its split-rear screen like in the real car and in all C2 Corvettes offered only that year. 29. There is a brown Mini in the background of Ken's garage. It has side repeaters which would be right for a US imported mini. I am not sure about the windows which look like a late ? 68 Australian Mini as it has wind up windows and quarter lights. 30. The TWA ticket envelope pictures a Lockheed Constellation propliner. TWA was all-jet since 1963. Their ticket envelopes would have shown a Boeing 707 jetliner.
