Trivia: It is an American comedy-drama film directed by Lasse Hallström from a screenplay written by Steven Knight, adapted from Richard Morais' 2010 novel with the same name. The film stars Helen Mirren, Om Puri, Manish Dayal and Charlotte Le Bon and tells the story of a feud between two adjacent restaurants in a French town: one operated by a recently relocated Indian family and the other a Michelin-starred restaurant. Produced by Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey for DreamWorks Pictures through their respective production companies, Amblin Entertainment and Harpo Films, in association with Participant Media and Image Nation, it was released by Touchstone Pictures on August 8, 2014, receiving generally positive reviews and earning nearly $90 million at the worldwide box office. Principal photography began on September 23, 2013, in southern France,[10] precisely in Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val,[11][12] lasted for nine weeks and proceeded in The Netherlands [13] and in the Cité du Cinéma studio complex, located in Saint-Denis, north of Paris.[14]The Hundred Foot Journey was extensively shot at scenic locales of Midi-Pyrénées.[8] Prior to actual filming, actors Manish Dayal and Charlotte Le Bon spent a considerable amount of time going to restaurants and observing and learning in kitchens.[15] To sign off on the food featured in the film, producer Juliet Blake consulted an Indian-born chef Floyd Cardoz who understands “fusing together two cultures through cooking.” Filming locations:

Om Puri, who plays Papa, was called Papa by the cast. He also moved out of the hotel they all stayed in so that he would have a place to cook for them.

The two restaurants facing each other were digitally created: the house which was presented as Maison Mumbai actually faced a large field. They paved a 75 m stretch of road and a building facade on the opposite side with a blue screen on the top. (More details on the fxguide dot com website of the film.)
Although the novel is set in the 1990s, the story is modernized for the film.
Marguerite collected mushroom called Boletus luridiformis which is fully edible, but she was told by Madame Mallory that it is Boletus satanas which is poisonous.
An omelette made in traditional French style should not be browned to such a great extent, even if it is a new creation by this emerging chef. Quote: Madame Mallory: "Oh. Vous m'étonnez." [Chuckles] Madame Mallory: "You have it. Hmm. Your pigeon had it, too." Hassan: "I know. I knew then, and I know now." Madame Mallory: "Arrogance." Hassan: "A chef must lead." Madame Mallory: "Sharp and cool and hot in the mouth, all at the same time. Do you know how long it takes chefs to learn that? What will Papa say?"

A contemporary adaptation of the 1977 Broadway musical of the same name, the film stars Quvenzhané Wallis, Jamie Foxx, Rose Byrne, Bobby Cannavale, and Cameron Diaz. The third film adaptation of the 1924 comic strip Little Orphan Annie by Harold Gray, following Columbia's 1982 theatrical film and Disney's 1999 television film, Annie began production in August 2013 and opened on December 19, 2014 to generally negative reviews, but was a box-office success, grossing over $133 million. Annie received two Golden Globe Award nominations, one for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical (for Wallis) and for Best Original Song. Trivia: It is an American road buddy comedy film co-written and directed by Bobby and Peter Farrelly. It is the third film in the Dumb and Dumber film series and a direct sequel to their 1994 film Dumb and Dumber. It stars Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels reprising their roles twenty years after the events of the first film, and also features Rob Riggle, Laurie Holden and Kathleen Turner. The film tells the story of Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne (played by Carrey and Daniels, respectively), who set out on a cross-country road trip to find Harry's daughter who has been adopted. First announced in October 2011, Dumb and Dumber To underwent a turbulent pre-production phase which included, at one point, Carrey withdrawing from the project, and New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. declining to produce and distribute the film. The project was eventually taken on in 2013 by Red Granite Pictures and the film was shot in the fall of the same year. Released on November 14, 2014, by Universal Pictures, Dumb and Dumber To received generally negative reviews from critics upon release. However, the film was a success at the box office, taking in $36.1 million on its opening weekend and a total gross of over $169 million. Filming locations:

Spences Bridge, British Columbia, Canada. Music: The Pied Piper theme is reinforced through Mychael Danna's score, which is heavily influenced by Medieval and Renaissance music with frequent appearances of a flute. Reception: The film received overwhelming critical acclaim upon its release. It holds a 100% rating at Rotten Tomatoes, with an average score of 8.9/10 based on 62 reviews, and a 100% rating based on 15 "Top Critic" reviews.[4] In 2002, readers of Playback voted it the greatest Canadian film ever made.[5] In 2004, the Toronto International Film Festival ranked it fourth in the Top 10 Canadian Films of All Time, and in 2015, moved it up to third.
References: Crash (1996).
Spoofed in: There's Something About Mary (1998);
The Simpsons: 500 Keys (2011) (TV Episode) - The school bus wrecking in winter conditions is a spin on the film's tragic events.
As indicated on Atom Egoyan's commentary track on the DVD, many people ask about the odd mask worn by the note-taker during the deposition scene. This is a Stenographer's Mask, an item which is used in real-life for the stenographer to record her own voice during the deposition.

Premiere voted this movie as one of "The 25 Most Dangerous Movies." (In the description for the list, the magazine stated, "These are movies about which you could say, "That's Not Entertainment." They're not "rides" or "diversions." They are galvanizing experiences that place squarely in your face all the stuff Hollywood usually presumes you go to the movies to get away from. Films that rearrange your head, that challenge your bedrock ideas about life and love and the big sleep. Consciousness-expanders, in other words, but rarely in a pleasant way. Thank God for them.")

Polley's character, Nicole, was an aspiring singer before the accident, and is seen on stage at various points in the film performing both The Tragically Hip's "Courage (for Hugh MacLennan)" and Jane Siberry's "One More Colour". The Tragically Hip's original version of "Courage" also appears in the film. It was Polley's idea to re-work "Courage" for the closing credits - a version she personally sang.

Trivia: It is a Canadian biopic directed by Richard Attenborough and starring Pierce Brosnan in the role of real life British schoolboy turned Indian trapper "Grey Owl," Archibald Belaney (1888–1938), and Annie Galipeau as his wife Anahareo, with brief appearances by Graham Greene and others. The screenplay was written by William Nicholson. The film was shot in the English town of Hastings, Quebec towns Chelsea and Wakefield, Jacques Cartier Park and Saskatchewan's Prince Albert National Park. Director Richard Attenborough said in an interview that he and his brother, noted presenter and naturalist David Attenborough, had attended "Grey Owl's" De Montfort Hall, Leicester lecture in 1936, depicted in the film, and being influenced by his advocacy of conservation. Filmed in 1998, but not released until the end of 2000. Anachronism: When Grey Owl's publisher Champlin arrives by airplane, to convince Grey Owl to go on tour in England, the airplane shown is clearly a DeHavilland DHC-2 "Beaver" on floats. This scene is set in approximately 1935, but the DeHavilland Beaver did not make its first flight until 1947.

Trivia: It is an American miniseries based on the 1999 nonfiction book of the same name by former New York Times writer, Lisa Belkin.[1][2] The book details a white middle-class neighborhood's resistance to a federally-mandated scattered-site public housing development in Yonkers, New York, and how these tensions affected the city as a whole.[3][4] The miniseries was written by David Simon and journalist William F. Zorzi – whom Simon worked with at The Baltimore Sun and on The Wire. It was directed by Paul Haggis.[1] Six episodes were ordered by HBO[1] and premiered on August 16, 2015. The name of both the show and the book that it is based upon comes from a F. Scott Fitzgerald quote: "Show me a hero and I will write you a tragedy. Filming Locations: New York City, New York, USA. Show Me a Hero made use of primary locations in Yonkers, New York, including the William A. Schlobohm Houses public housing projects. In the Yonkers Public Library, scenes of town gatherings were shot.[52] The Cottage Place Gardens was used to substitute for the garden-style Mulford Gardens public housing project, as it has since been torn down.[53] The show also shot at the Yonkers City Hall, in the Yonkers City Council Chambers where actual events took place. The show makes an extensive use of Bruce Springsteen music, with Springsteen's music often appearing during the scenes where Wasicsko is featured.[56] The scenes in the housing projects incorporate period hip hop and rap.[34] Steve Earle's song, "When The People Find Out," from his 1990 album The Hard Way, is used in the closing credits.

Trivia: It is an American fantasy musical directed by Rob Marshall, and adapted to the screen by James Lapine from his and Stephen Sondheim's Tony Award-winning Broadway musical of the same name. It features an ensemble cast that includes Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, James Corden, Anna Kendrick, Chris Pine, Tracey Ullman, Christine Baranski, Lilla Crawford, Daniel Huttlestone, MacKenzie Mauzy, Billy Magnussen, and Johnny Depp. Inspired by the Grimm Brothers' fairy tales of "Little Red Riding Hood", "Cinderella", "Jack and the Beanstalk", and "Rapunzel", the film is a fantasy genre crossover centered on a childless couple, who set out to end a curse placed on them by a vengeful witch. Ultimately, the characters are forced to rectify the consequences of their actions. Filming locations: Dover Castle, Dover, Kent, England, UK; Windsor Great Park, Windsor, Berkshire, England, UK (forest); Waverley Abbey, Surrey, England, UK; Dover, Kent, England, UK; Hambleden, Buckinghamshire, England, UK; Shepperton Studios, Shepperton, Surrey, England, UK; England, UK.
Despite prominent billing, Johnny Depp only appears in nearly five minutes of the film.
In the stage production the witch is typically played by a young actress in old age makeup, who then has the old age makeup removed after the transformation takes place. Meryl Streep admitted that at age of 64 when she filmed the role, it was more of a challenge to make her appear clearly younger after the transformation takes place.
Despite it being revealed in the film that Rapunzel was The Baker's sister, they never actually meet after the revelation.
In the original stage musical, the death of Jack's Mother was more violent with the Steward clubbing her with his cane. In this film, he merely pushes her to the ground.
In the original stage show, Rapunzel dies by running off and being crushed by the giant. In the theatrical release, she rides off with her prince.
In the original stage play, the Baker's father helps the Baker and his wife with the items they need to lift the curse and dies when it is lifted. In the film, he appears as a vision.
The Giant's face is not seen in full until the moment she is killed.
This is the second movie in which Meryl Streep undergoes a magical age transformation. The first is Death Becomes Her (1992).
To help get the project green-lit, a number of actors (most of which did not appear in the film) attended a table read, including: Nina Arianda (as The Baker's Wife), Christine Baranski (Cinderella's Stepmother), Tammy Blanchard (Florinda), Victoria Clark (Cinderella's Mother/Granny/The Giant), James Corden (The Baker), David Garrison (The Narrator), Ivan Hernandez (The Wolf), Megan Hilty (Lucinda), Cheyenne Jackson (Rapunzel's Prince), Allison Janney (Jack's Mother), Anna Kendrick (Cinderella), Mike McGrath (Steward/Mysterious Man), Donna Murphy (the Witch), Laura Osnes (Rapunzel), Taylor Trensch (Jack), Casey Whyland (Red Riding Hood), and Patrick Wilson (Cinderella's Prince).
Not only does Chris Pine emulate William Shatner's singing style during the singing of "Agony", he also portrays Shatner's stereotypical Captain Kirk (played by Pine in the 2009 reboot of Star Trek) while addressing the palace crowd following the "earthquake".
The one item that the witch said that could not use belonged to the baker's sister Rupunzel
The only item for the potion that belonged to a boy was the cow as white as milk. Quote: "Cinderella's Prince: I was raised to be charming, not sincere."

Maps to the Stars. 2014 (Canadian), Starring

Main cast

Julianne Moore as Havana Segrand

A very famous but aging and quickly-fading actress, living in the shadow of her legendary movie-star mother and feeling abused by her. Moore based the character on "an amalgam of people I've known and observed. She is someone who lives completely isolated in this make-believe world. She doesn’t really have a family and she’s still very angry with her mother because she feels she was abused. She’s always lived in her mother’s shadow, and in her mind, it’s all a kind of mixed-up, Freudian mess."[27]

Mia Wasikowska as Agatha Weiss

The badly-scarred and estranged pyromaniac daughter of the Weiss family who takes a job as Havana's personal assistant, while waiting for the opportunity to make amends with her family. Wasikowska said, "I love Agatha because she’s dark inside but at the same time in a lot of ways she has this very positive outlook. There’s something very sweet and sad about this girl who, in the midst of these celebrity-obsessed parents, and this troubled past, really just wants to connect with them. They've totally rejected her, but in a way, she's desperately trying to mimic their lives. She’s desperately trying to find her identity." She further added, "She has the gloves she wears over her burns, the facial scar, and all these rituals with the poem and the pills she takes, it's all very distinct to who she is."[27]

John Cusack as Dr. Stafford Weiss

The head of the Weiss family, a TV psychologist with a number of high-profile celebrity clients, and immensely egoistic about the success of his son Benjie. Stafford exploits people's emotions and takes advantage of them. Stafford Weiss and his wife Cristina are brother and sister; they were separated at birth and discovered their relation after meeting in college and becoming a couple. According to Cusack, "He sees himself as a healer. He’s part Tony Robbins, part Reiki Master, part shrink. But his son is the real star—he’s a massive teen star of Bieberesque proportions." Describing the script he said, "It was the most savage destruction of Hollywood fame and secrets and that whole toxic brew that I'd ever seen."[27]

Robert Pattinson as Jerome Fontana

A limousine driver and struggling actor who wants to be a successful screenwriter. Jerome is inspired by Bruce Wagner, who, at the time when he conceived the idea for this story, was himself a struggling actor and writer working as a limo driver. Pattinson described the character as most sane and ordinary but like every LA dreamer in the story and said, "Jerome would never accept that he is just a limo driver. I think he feels he’s just waiting for his break. And yet, he’s seemingly the only one in this story who's not going insane—or who isn’t a ghost." And about the script he added that "It's really about people who lie to themselves - right up until the end."[27]

Olivia Williams as Cristina Weiss

Ambitious and controlling, she manages the career of her son. Cristina Weiss and her husband Stafford are sister and brother; they were separated at birth and discovered their relation after meeting in college and becoming a couple. According to Williams, "She is a very ambitious woman and we get to see her downfall from the very heights of her power. She operates in a world where someone could be the nastiest person on earth and make your life hell, but you might still want them in your movie because they'll make you money."[27]

Sarah Gadon as Clarice Taggart

An iconic Hollywood movie star who died in a fire and appears as a twenty-something-year-old ghost to her daughter Havana. Cronenberg said that "it's such a lovely, unusual role, because she’s simply this ghostly memory."[27] Gadon said, "I really want to do the film because I thought it was a critique about contemporary Hollywood. And, specifically, of a woman's place in Hollywood."[28]

Evan Bird as Benjie Weiss

A teen sensation and controversial star, who is trying to get his career on track after his stint at rehab while simultaneously battling demons from his past. Cronenberg was not sure that any child actor could play Benjie's character successfully until he saw Bird in the TV series The Killing. Bird said about his character, "[H]e doesn't really have love and yet he doesn't really have limitations, either. So he’s searching for both of those things. He’s making way too much money, he’s being taken advantage of by his parents, and he’s really screwed up."[27]

Secondary cast

Carrie Fisher as Herself

Fisher has a cameo appearance in the film. Agatha Weiss befriended her on Twitter to write a novel and on her recommendation Havana hired Agatha as her new personal assistant.[29][30][31]

Jayne Heitmeyer as Azita Wachtel

An actress and Havana's rival for the coveted role in the remake of Clarice's 1960 movie Stolen Waters.[32]

Jonathan Watton as Sterl Carruth

A film actor and friend of Havana.[33]

Amanda Brugel as Victoria

An entertainment news reporter, who gets the scoop on Benjie Weiss.

Justin Kelly as Rhett

A young Hollywood actor and co-star of Benjie.

Emilia McCarthy as Kayla

A young Hollywood actress and co-star of Benjie.

Kiara Glasco as Cammy

A girl who died young and appears as a ghost to Benjie because he visited her in the hospital before her death with the intentions of making a film on her life, and used his visit as a publicity stunt.[34]

Ari Cohen as Jeb Berg

A Hollywood producer working on the sequel of Benjie's blockbuster film, a fictitious teen comedy titled "Bad Babysitter".[35]

Dawn Greenhalgh as Genie

Havana's agent who assists her in landing the role in the remake of Clarice's film.[34]

Domenic Ricci as Micah

Azita's young son who died in a tragic accident.[34]

Sean Robertson as Roy

A four-year-old costar of Benjie, whom Benjie perceives as competition and injures him during his hallucination believing him to be Cammy.[34]

Gord Rand as Damien Javitz

A rising talented director of the remake of Stolen Waters, and described as "He’s no P. T. Anderson, but he resurrects actors."

Trivia: It is a satirical drama film directed by David Cronenberg, and starring Julianne Moore, Mia Wasikowska, John Cusack, Robert Pattinson, Olivia Williams, Sarah Gadon, and Evan Bird. The screenplay was written by Bruce Wagner, who had written a novel entitled Dead Stars based on the Maps to the Stars script, after initial plans for making the film with Cronenberg fell through. This is the second consecutive collaboration between Cronenberg and Pattinson (after Cosmopolis) and marks the third collaboration between Cronenberg and Prospero Pictures, who previously collaborated on A Dangerous Method and Cosmopolis. This is also the third Cronenberg film made with Canadian actress Sarah Gadon. It is the first Cronenberg film shot in the United States. The film concerns the plight of a child star and a washed up actress while commenting on the entertainment industry's relationship with Western civilization as a whole. The film premiered in competition for the Palme d'Or at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival on May 19, 2014. Moore won the festival's Best Actress Award. Following its premiere at Cannes, the film had a theatrical release in France on May 21, 2014. Filming locations:

Robert Pattinson was cast as the struggling limousine driver 'Jerome Fontana' and is mostly seen in his profesional role driving in the front seat. In Cronenberg's last film Pattinson played 'Eric Packer' a billionaire sitting most of the time in the privileged back seat of a limousine. It's a self-referential nod to the former film implying that 'the seats' and one's position in the hierarchy of society can change quickly.

In an almost 50-year career, this was the very first time that David Cronenberg ever filmed anything in the United States (his previous movies were mostly shot in Canada or the UK). The film shot for 5 days in Los Angeles and Beverly Hills (location manager Scott Trimble) and 24 days in Cronenberg's native Toronto (location manager Marty Dejczak).
Novelist and screenwriter Bruce Wagner appears uncredited in Maps to the Stars (2014): He is the bald chauffeur wearing sunglasses and a black suit who's standing in the background as Benjie Weiss is insulting Arnold in front of the L.A. Children's Hospital. Wagner used to work as a chauffeur and limousine driver before becoming famous as a novelist.
Julianne Moore and Mia Wasikowska previously played a mother and daughter in The Kids Are All Right (2010), in which Wasikowska's character also came from an unorthodox family with a lot of baggage.
In Maps to the Stars (2014) these 32 real-life stars, celebrities and historical figures are mentioned: Ryan Seacrest, Tatum O'Neal, Ryan O'Neal, Juliette Lewis, Ryan Gosling, Drew Barrymore, Emma Watson, Paul Thomas Anderson, Garry Marshall, Bernardo Bertolucci, Carrie Fisher, Anne Hathaway, Robert Downey Jr., Demi Lovato, Jim Carrey, Zooey Deschanel, Kiernan Shipka, Shirley Temple, Halle Berry, Nicole Kidman, Lance Armstrong, Oprah Winfrey, Jack Cassidy, David Cassidy, Shaun Cassidy, Harvey Weinstein, Chuck Lorre, Al Gore, The Dalai Lama, Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, Mother Teresa and Carl Gustav Jung.
The movie was going to be shot in 2004, with David Cronenberg and Julianne Moore already attached to the project, but the director wanted to film everything in Los Angeles and it was financially impossible.
According to Bruce Wagner, the casting of Robert Pattinson was what finally got the movie made, financially speaking.
Julianne Moore starred opposite Kristen Stewart in Still Alice (2014). In this movie, Moore stars opposite Robert Pattinson. Both Stewart and Pattinson were the stars of the Twilight Saga.
The award that Agatha uses to bludgeon Havana is a Genie Award, an award formerly presented for achievement in film in Canada before its discontinuation in 2012. Director David Cronenberg is a 5 time Genie Award winner.
Paul Éluard's poem "Liberté" from the collection "Au Rendez-vous Allemand" (first published 1942) features prominently in Maps to the Stars (2014). Éluard (1895 - 1952) was a French poet and one of the founders of the surrealist movement. The poem "Liberté" was adapted by Bruce Wagner and David Cronenberg and is cited (in parts) by multiple characters including Agatha Weiss, Benjie Weiss and Clarice Taggart in her role in 'Stolen Waters'. Since the fictional feature 'Stolen Waters' is a well-known classic in the world of Maps to the Stars (2014) and Agatha Weiss is characterized as a huge fan of the film, it is very likely that 'Stolen Waters' is supposed to be the original source of her knowledge of the poem "Liberté". Agatha Weiss might have sent her brother Benjie Weiss the printed poem, that he secretly reads at night, in a letter.
Actress and novelist Carrie Fisher appears as herself in Maps to the Stars (2014). Fisher is best known for playing the role of 'Princess Leia' in the Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977) series. David Cronenberg's regular cinematographer Peter Suschitzky was the director of photography of Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980).
In one scene we see Agatha Weiss (Mia Wasikowska) worshipping the (fictitious) Star of Clarice Taggart (Sarah Gadon) on the real Walk of Fame in Hollywood, Los Angeles. In real-life two members of the main cast of Maps to the Stars (2014) already have a Star on the Walk of Fame: John Cusack since April 24, 2012 at 6644 Hollywood Blvd. and Julianne Moore since October 3, 2013 at 6250 Hollywood Boulevard. Quotes: 1. Agatha Weiss: "On the stairs of Death I write your name, Liberty." 2. Havana Segrand: [Dancing] "Na-na-na-na! Na-na-na-na! Hey-hey-hey! Goodbye! Sing it!"

Storyline: Based on the true story of journalist Gary Webb, the film takes place in the mid-1990s. Webb uncovered the CIA's alleged role in importing crack cocaine into the U.S. to secretly fund the Nicaraguan contra rebels. Despite enormous pressure to stay away, Webb chose to pursue the story and went public with his evidence, publishing the series called "Dark Alliance". He then experienced a vicious smear campaign fueled by the CIA, during which he found himself defending his integrity, his family and his life.
Trivia: It is an American crime thriller film directed by Michael Cuesta and written by Peter Landesman. It is based on the book of the same name by Nick Schou and the book Dark Alliance by Gary Webb which focuses on CIA involvement in Contra cocaine trafficking. The film stars Jeremy Renner (in his first film as a producer). The film was released on October 10, 2014. Principal photography was in several Georgia locations, including Atlanta, Cobb County and Decatur, and also in Washington, District of Columbia, USA. The film has received positive reviews from critics. Just before the closing credits, there is a short video showing the real Gary Webb at home with his children.
Various members of the cast and crew have admitted to receiving government-level "push back" to the film, both during filming and in post-production.
Jeremy Renner was initially in talks to star as political whistle-blower, Julian Assange in 2013's The Fifth Estate. Renner ultimately declined the part and moved forward with Kill the Messenger instead.
Director Michael Cuesta calls Kill The Messenger "Jeremy Renner's greatest performance since The Hurt Locker."
As Gary Webb, Jeremy Renner drives a Triumph TR6 Convertible in the movie.
Michael Cuesta directed Jeremy Renner in the 2005 movie "12 and Holding"
Features the Pearl Jam song "Nothing As It Seems" during a story reseaching montage. Quotes: 1. Gary Webb: "American kids did die and are still dying, just not the ones you care about apparently." 2. Fred Weil: "Some stories are just too true to tell." 3. Gary Webb: I thought my job was to tell the public the truth, the facts; pretty or not, and let the publishing of those facts make a difference in how people look at things, at themselves, and what they stand for... Anachronisms: 1. The first time Gary visits Nicaragua there is a shot of one of the streets, there you can see the logo of the telecommunications company Claro, which did not exist until 2003 and didn't arrive to Nicaragua until 2006. 2. There are new (large face) $100 bills in the crack-selling montage. 3. In the beginning of the film, it is dated as 1996. Later, when Gary is washing his motorcycle in the parking lot of the apartment complex, the tags on his bike show Oct '95.

Trivia: It is an American stoner crime comedy-drama film. The seventh feature film directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, Inherent Vice was adapted by Anderson from the novel of the same name by Thomas Pynchon, and stars an ensemble cast including Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin, Owen Wilson, Katherine Waterston, Reese Witherspoon, Benicio del Toro, Jena Malone, Joanna Newsom, Jeannie Berlin, Maya Rudolph, Michael K. Williams and Martin Short. As with its source material, the storyline revolves around Larry "Doc" Sportello, a stoner hippie and PI in 1970, as he becomes embroiled in the Los Angeles criminal underworld whilst investigating three cases interrelated by the disappearance of his ex-girlfriend and her wealthy boyfriend. Anderson's adaptation of Inherent Vice had been in development since 2010; it is the first time one of Pynchon's novels has been adapted for the screen. The film marks Anderson's second consecutive collaboration with Joaquin Phoenix following The Master and involves a number of his other recurring collaborators, including producers Daniel Lupi and JoAnne Sellar, cinematographer Robert Elswit and editor Leslie Jones. It is also the third consecutive Anderson film to be scored by Radiohead guitarist and keyboardist Jonny Greenwood, following There Will Be Blood and The Master. The film premiered at the New York Film Festival on October 4, 2014, and began a limited theatrical release in the United States on December 12, 2014. Critical reception was polarized, but generally leant towards acclaim; reviewers praised the cast, particularly Brolin, Phoenix and Waterston, while criticism tended to focus on its convoluted plot and lack of coherence. It went on to receive a number of award nominations, including two Oscar nominations and a Best Actor Golden Globe Award nomination for Phoenix. The National Board of Review named it one of the ten best films of the year. Some reviews have said that Inherent Vice has the makings of a cult film. Filming locations:

Features: Red Nightmare (1962) (Short) - Playing in the movie theater at Chryskylodon; Adam-12 (1968) (TV Series) - Doc is watching an episode on TV and spots Bigfoot as one of the extras in the scene.
After the credits roll, the end caption is the opening inscription from Pynchon's novel, Inherent Vice: "Under the Paving-Stones, the Beach!" - Graffito, Paris, May 1968. Quotes: 1. Sortilège: [Narrating] "Inherent vice in a maritime insurance policy is anything that you can't avoid. Eggs break, chocolate melts, glass shatters, and Doc wondered what that meant when it applied to ex old ladies." 2. Lt. Det. Christian F. "Bigfoot" Bjornsen: [in Japanese restaurant] "Chotto, Kenichiro, Dozo! Motto panukeiku... motto panukeiku! MOTTO PANUKEIKU!" Anachronisms: 1. In the restaurant discussing the Golden Fang, Doc and Sauncho Smilax bring up Howard Hughes and his purchases in Las Vegas real estate. The movie takes place in 1970, Howard Hughes dies in 1976, yet Doc refers to Howard Hughes in the past tense when he says, "Howard Hughes was Italian?" as if he were dead. 2. At the dentist's office the receptionists asks for "contact information"- a term not coined until the 21st century. In 1970, one would ask only for "a phone number" or "address." 3. When Doc walks past the laundromat, just before entering the Golden Fang building, modern cars can be seen driving down the street in the background reflected in the laundromat windows.

The large cheese bought instead of a children's hospital has "Hobson's Choice" written on it a few times. This refers to the idea that the only choice is take it or leave it. The phrase may have originated from Thomas Hobson (1544-1631) a livery stable owner in Cambridge England. Customers would only be offered the horse nearest the door, this ensured a good rotation of his horses and no quibbling from customers demanding better horses. It is also the title of the film Hobson's Choice (1954).

Because he was on a 700 calories diet, Jack O'Connell fainted twice while filming the scene in which he lifts the timber. Quotes: 1. Older Pete: "If you can take it, you can make it." "A moment of pain is worth a lifetime of glory." 2. Louis Zamperini: [yelling] "HIT ME!" Anachronisms: 1. At the train station scene when Peter is seeing Louis off, a 50-star US flag is hanging from the depot building. The stars are not arranged in the simple 8-row, 6-column configuration of the 48-star flag of 1912; rather, they have the offset arrangement of the 1959 50-star flag. 2. The national markings of the American transport plane shown near the end of the movie (1945) have a red dot in the middle of the star. That red dot was deleted from American planes in 1942 to avoid any possible confusion with the "hinomaru" red circle used by all Japanese planes. 3. There is a modern white dress with a modern "invisible" back zipper when Louis is taken to lunch in downtown Japan. She is sitting behind him with her back turned and you can see it a few times when the camera pans to Louis. Long center back zippers only became commonly used in the 1950s and onwards. Invisible zippers didn't come into use of clothing until much much later after 1950. 4. When Louis departs for the 1936 Olympics, he boards a train consisting of wooden passenger cars with open platforms. By 1936, virtually all passenger trains had steel cars with enclosed vestibules. The train used in the film would be more correct for the 1890s. 5. The US transport that delivers Zamperini at the end is a Lockheed Electra with Australian civil markings. Furthermore, the non-regulation stenciling on the nose says "Army Air Corp" when the Air CORPS became the Army Air Forces in 1941. The military "serial" is the current Aussie registration, VH-HID. 6. The Tokyo radio station JOAK also had the call sign WVTR. This did not occur until after the allied occupation as WVTR was an US armed forces call sign and did indeed take over JOAK.

Trivia: Differs from the novel where Christine's diary is in the form of a journal / notebook, whereas in the film it is a camera. This was the last feature film to use Fuji 35mm film stock. Production of this film stock ceased at this time. Early in the movie the land telephone rings in Christine and "Ben's" house and it is the single US ring tone not the double UK ringtone. This is one of two 2014 on screen collaborations for Mark Strong and Colin Firth, and the fourth overall, The others being Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014), Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011), and Fever Pitch (1997). In the book, Christine is a 47 years old woman. This movie marks Nicole's and Colin's 2nd on-screen collaboration, after The Railway Man (2013). In the first few minutes of the film when Colin Firth shows Kidman the board of the things she needs to remember, "Strawberries" are listed as an allergy of Christine's. Nicole Kidman is allergic to strawberries in real life. Adam's birth certificate says he was registered in the London Borough of Greenwich. Quote: Christine: "Who are you?" Ben: "I'm your husband... Ben." Christine: "What?"
