Trivia: 1. Written and directed by Taika Waititi. 2. Due to the films success in New Zealand, the song "Poi E", originally released in 1984, re-entered the New Zealand charts and reached number 3 on May 24 2010. It is the only New Zealand song to chart over three decades. 3. In this film, Taika Waititi's character says, "don't get into the Nazi stuff." Nine years later, Waititi directed Jojo Rabbit (2019) which is set in Nazi Germany about a boy who 'gets into the Nazi stuff'.
Spoofs: Michael Jackson: Thriller (1983) (Video) The dance is parodied at the end of the film. Anachronisms: 1. The plastic road markers that "Boy" was playing with and bending down on the side of the road were not found anywhere in New Zealand until around 1990. The film is set 6 years earlier when wooden road markers were in use. 2. The Goodnight Kiwi that was shown on the TV during Shutdown was the incorrect version for the period, in the film, they were using the early 1990's version with the TV2 logo at the bottom at the end. In 1984, it should have ended with the message "Goodnight from Television New Zealand". 3. In the opening scene it shows a wrecking yard of cars, noticeable one of the cars is a white 1991 Ford Falcon EA station wagon, not available in 1984. 4. When Boy is talking to his friend Dynasty in the car in one scene when their parents are at the pub, Dynasty says her Mum is playing the "pokies." Poker machines were not introduced into New Zealand until 1991, 7 years after the movie is set. 5. In the opening scene there is a decrepit old truck with a bent old license plate "ME1831" License plates in NZ are released alphabetically starting with AA and culminating with ZZ before the system switched to the a three letter three number system. "M" license plates were first seen in about 1985 - a year after this film was set. A truck that old in 1985 would have had and A,B,C or D license plate. 6. While driving, Boy and his Dad pass a yellow warning sign. These signs were not used in New Zealand at the time of the film.

Thornton insisted that his brother go into rehab before starting on the movie. Scott managed to clean up for the film but relapsed back into alcoholism two weeks after shooting completed. 3. Warwick Thornton always planned to have Mitjili Napanangka Gibson in his film. Only trouble was that Gibson can't read and English is not her native language. 4.
