Movies I Have Seen - August 2017 (20 movies)

Operation Avalanche. 2016 (American-Canadian found footage), Starring Matt Johnson, Owen Williams, Josh Boles and Ray James. Movie Network, August 1, 2017, with Dr. Connie Luther. Soundtrack: "But It's Allright" - Written and Performed by J. J. Jackson; "Bad Moon Rising", "Keep On Chooglin" and "Fortunate Son" - Performed by Creedence Clearwater Revival; "The Bomb Run" - Performed by Laurie Johnson; "Rockin' Chair Blues" - Performed by Jay Ramsey; "Just One More Chance" - Performed by Lord Luther; "But It's Alright" - Performed by JJ Jackson; "Rule Britannia"; "Blue Danube"; "Whipping Post" - Performed by The Allman Brothers Band; "Moanin'" - Performed by Art Blakey. Trivia: It is a found footage conspiracy thriller film directed by Matt Johnson, who co-wrote the film with Josh Boles. Johnson and Owen Williams star as CIA agents who infiltrate NASA to expose a potential mole, only to become embroiled in a conspiracy to fake the 1969 Apollo 11 Moon landing. Most of the scenes in the film were improvised. The film is director Matt Johnson's thesis film. Anachronisms. 1. Multiple times in the movie the "CIA agents" pronounce the words "about" and "sorry" as Canadians typically do, not as typical Americans would. 2. In two scenes in the movie, one at the very beginning and the other right at the end, a dark blue pick up truck can be seen parked in a car park. The truck looks like it was made in the 80's - 90's and does not fit into the time line of the movie. It also has mag wheels of a modern design which look out of place in the 60's. 3. During the car chase, the baseball broadcast references Kansas City Athletics pitcher Catfish Hunter. The Athletics had moved to Oakland in 1968, a year before the scene takes place.

Blair Witch. 2016 (found footage supernatural horror), Starring James Allen McCune as James Donahue, Callie Hernandez as Lisa Arlington, Brandon Scott as Peter Jones, Corbin Reid as Ashley Bennett, Wes Robinson as Lane and Valorie Curry as Talia. Movie Network, August 2, 2017. Soundtrack: "Pagan Dance Move" - Written and Performed by Arnaud Rebotini; "Rien a Paris" - Performed by Liz and Laszlo; "Hakmarrja" - Performed by NKVD.

Ouija: Origin of Evil. 2016, Starring Elizabeth Reaser as Alice Zander, Annalise Basso as Paulina "Lina" Zander, Lin Shaye as Old Paulina Zander, Lulu Wilson as Doris Zander, Henry Thomas as Father Tom Hogan, Parker Mack as Michael "Mikey" Russell, Doug Jones as Ghoul Marcus, Halle Charlton as Ellie, Alexis G. Zall as Betty, Kate Siegel as Jenny Browning, Sam Anderson as Mr. Browning, Ele Keats as Ellie's Mom, Nicholas Keenan as Walter, Michael Weaver as Roger Zander and Umran Mustafa as Keith Hemmingway. Movie Network, August 3, 2017. Soundtrack: "You Gotta Move Me" - Performed by Mike Lacey; "Where You Are Is Where I'm Going to Be" - Performed by Elijah Honey; "Stick Around" - Written by Tony Allan; "May I Have This Dance" - Written by Alan Ett (as Alan Paul Ett) and William Ashford; "Moon Blue" - Written and Performed by Richard Geere; "Dream Machine" - Written by Daniel Edwardson; "Goodbye Little Girl Goodbye" - Performed by Morrie Morrison Orchestra.
Trivia: The film is a prequel to the 2014 film Ouija. Anachronisms: 1. In the restaurant scene, although the air is "smokey", not one person in the place is seen smoking. 2. In 1967, a fair percentage of the customers would have been smoking. The percentage of smokers in America for that period was around 40%. 3. Drive licenses pulled from behind the basement wall clearly show expiration date of 1950. Addresses show ZIP codes. They did not exist until 1963. 4. The movie's set in 1967, but there are no ashtrays - not in the home, the ice cream shop, or the restaurant.

Welcome to Me. 2014, Starring Kristen Wiig as Alice Klieg, James Marsden as Rich Ruskin, Linda Cardellini as Gina Selway, Wes Bentley as Gabe Ruskin, Jennifer Jason Leigh as Deb Moseley, Alan Tudyk as Ted Thurber, Tim Robbins as Dr. Daryl Moffat, Joan Cusack as Dawn Hurley, Thomas Mann as Rainer Ybarra and Loretta Devine as Barb. Netflix, August 4, 2017. Soundtrack: "Where Is My Mind" - Performed by Michael Baiardi; "Happy Talk" - Written by Oscar Hammerstein II (uncredited) & Richard Rodgers (uncredited), Performed by Muriel Smith; "Brubecking", "Bossa Me", "Wes Time", "Django" - Written and Performed by Brian Wayy; "Girl" - Performed by Opossom; "The Happiest Girl in the Whole U.S.A." - Written and Performed by Donna Fargo; "Good Dreams" - Performed by P5; "Catch A Falling Star" - Performed by Mrs. Miller; "Catch A Falling Star" - Performed by Tim Helisek; "Sun" - Written and Performed by Margo Guryan; "Where Is My Mind" - Performed by the Pixies; "Love, Love, Love" - Performed by Lili Rose McKay; "This Is My Time" - Performed by Kristen Wiig; "Ozma" - Performed by Shannon and the Clams; "I'll Be Around" - Performed by The Mills Brothers; "ESP Switch" - Performed by Michael Farneti. Quote: Alice Klieg: "I would like to read from a prepared statement."

Arrival. 2016, Starring Amy Adams as Louise Banks, Jeremy Renner as Ian Donnelly, Forest Whitaker as Colonel Weber, Michael Stuhlbarg as Agent Halpern, Mark O'Brien as Captain Marks and Tzi Ma as General Shang. Netflix, August 4, 2017, with Dr. Connie Luther. Music by Jóhann Jóhannsson. Soundtrack: "On the Nature of Daylight" - Written and Performed by Max Richter; "Arrival" - Written by Jóhann Jóhannsson; "Serenade in E Major, Op. 22, B. 52: IV Larghetto" - Written by Antonín Dvorák, Performed by the Berlin Chamber Players, Benoît Fromanger, Conductor. The violin melody in the last sequence is palindromic. Anachronism: The Danish uniform shown on the screen of the landing site transmission from Greenland is an outdated version that only conscripts and the home guard use.

Area 51. 2015 (found footage science fiction horror), Starring Reid Warner as Reid, Darrin Bragg as Darrin, Jelena Nik as Jelena, Ben Rovner as Ben, Sandra Staggs as Mother, Roy Abramsohn as Father, David Saucedo as Town Local, Glenn Campbell as Himself, Jamel King as Jamel Bragg, Nikka Far as Nikki and Norio Hayakawa as Himself. Netflix, August 5, 2017, with Dr. Connie Luther. Soundtrack: "Reid's Rap" (uncredited) - Performed by Reid Warner. Quote: Town local interviewee: "Area 51, man. It's the 51st state."

Jackie. 2016, Starring Natalie Portman as Jacqueline "Jackie" Kennedy, Peter Sarsgaard as Robert F. Kennedy, Greta Gerwig as Nancy Tuckerman, Billy Crudup as The Journalist, Sir John Hurt as The Priest, Max Casella as Jack Valenti, Beth Grant as Claudia "Lady Bird" Johnson, Richard E. Grant as William Walton, Caspar Phillipson as President John F. Kennedy, John Carroll Lynch as President Lyndon B. Johnson, Julie Judd as Ethel Kennedy, Brody and Aiden Weinberg as John F. Kennedy Jr., Mathilde Ripley as Joan Bennett Kennedy, Barbara Foliot as Pat Kennedy, Albain Venzo as Peter Lawford, David DeBoy as John Metzler, Patrick Hamel as Sargent Shriver, Frédérique Adler as Eunice Kennedy Shriver, Stéphane Höhn as Charles Collingwood, Sunnie Pelant as Caroline Kennedy, Sara Verhagen as Mary Barelli Gallagher, Georgie Glen as Rose Kennedy, Roland Pidoux as Pablo Casals, William Beaux d'Albenas as Hugh D. Auchincloss, Nicolas Guigou as James C. Auchincloss, David Friszman as Jack Brooks, Éric Soubelet as Benjamin Bradlee, Craig Sechler as Governor John Connally, Emmanuel Herault as Robert McNamara, Serge Onteniente as Brigade General Charles de Gaulle, Rebecca Compton as Nellie Connally and David Caves as Clint Hill. Movie Network, August 6, 2017. Soundtrack: "Happy Birthday" - Written by Mildred J. Hill and Patty S. Hill (as Public Domain), Performed by Natalie Portman, Greta Gerwig, Deborah Findlay,Sunnie Pelant, Aiden Weinberg and Brody Weinberg; "Camelot" - Lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner, Music by Frederick Loewe (1960), Performed by Richard Burton; "Affection No. 3" - Composed by Paul Zaza (as Peter Dufferin); "El cant dels ocells" - Composed by Pau Casals; "Camelot: Finale Ultimo" - Composed by Frederick Loewe, Lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner, Performed by Richard Burton and the Camelot Ensemble. Anachronisms: 1. The White House Tour was broadcast on Valentine's Day 1962, not in 1961 as was shown in this film - in case you wondered, that's why Mrs. Kennedy wore red. The documentary was titled 'A Tour of the White House with Mrs. John F. Kennedy.' 2. In the opening scene when the journalist pulls up at the compound of Jackie Kennedy's residence, the taxi had side marker light, which did not appear on cars in the US till the 1968 model year. The scene was supposed to have taken place just a week after the assassination in November 1963. 3. Towards the end of the movie, Jackie is looking out her limousine and watches mannequins being set up in what appears to be store display windows with the words "The Hamilton" written on them. The Hamilton is a restaurant and concert venue, which opened in 2011. In the 60s there was a local department store named Garfinkles in that location. 4. The exterior location shots in Washington, DC were generally in the historically correct location, but made no attempt to recreate those landmarks accurately in period. For example, the funeral cortege passes the Riggs Bank building across from the Department of the Treasury, but the building signage is for SunTrust (the bank that currently occupies this space and didn't exist until 1985). As Jackie is leaving the White House and passes a department store removing her iconic fashions from the windows, the building is what was the Garfinkels Department Store in 1963, but the signage is for that of The Hamilton restaurant, which now occupies the spot. Similarly, no attempt is made to "retro" or disguise the current (2017) signage and identities of the any of the buildings the funeral cortege passes in downtown Washington. 5. When Jackie is preparing to leave the White House, we see her halfheartedly packing some of the boxes herself. While the viewer is free to believe this or not, no one can really contest it either. What is manifestly untrue however is the plastic packing tape she uses to seal the boxes. This tape would only become available more than a decade later. 6. About halfway through, Jackie is packing to leave the White House. She's using the 3-inch wide adhesive packing tape that makes a loud sound when you pull it off the spool and is commonplace today. That kind of tape wasn't around much until the 70s or 80s. At first it was just used commercially. Before that, large boxes were sealed with tape that was embedded with fibers and had to be wet with water in order to make it sticky. 7. The reporter refers to the White House tour as being "a couple years ago." In fact, it was the previous year. 8. Pantyhose were invented in 1959 at a textile mill in North Carolina. They began to become commercially available in 1965. Jackie is shown removing what appear to be pantyhose (not stockings) when she is cleaning up at the White House after the assassination. In 1963, she, being the First Lady, might have had an early pair, but it is unlikely.

When Ray Kroc is looking at the map to plot his route to San Bernardino to visit the first McDonalds, the city of Irvine, CA is shown on the map. This is an error due to the fact that Irvine was not incorporated as a city until 1971, and the Irvine Company did not start developing in that area until the 1960s.

The highway lines en route to Ray Kroc driving to the first McDonald's with the golden arches are painted yellow - something that was not done in the 1950s, which was the time period this scene took place in.

When Ray is looking at the map, he follows his finger along highway 66 and lands on San Bernardino. It shows some surrounding cities, one of which is "Moreno Valley". Moreno Valley didn't become an incorporated city until 1984. In the 1950's that city would have been called "Sunnymead" on a map.

The "Minnesota Is McDonald's Country" banner at McDonald's Minneapolis location is printed in the font ITC Machine, which was released in 1970.

Some shots in San Bernardino involve modern W.C. Hayes railroad crossing signals, something that wouldn't exist in 1954.

When Dick McDonald tells Ray Kroc that the "Golden Arches" concept restaurant design had been built in Phoenix, the extreme close up of the map reveals pixelation of the printed image, meaning it was printed from a digital source and appears to have been printed on a modern day large format inkjet printer.

The road map from which Ray finds the city of San Bernardino has its city names printed in the font "Capitals", released by Apple in 1998.

Taking place during the 1954-1955 period, the telephone at the original San Bernardino McDonald's location is a Western Electric Model 554 wall phone, which debuted in 1956.

One of the record albums in Ray Kroc's 1954 hotel room featured Columbia Records' "Walking Eye" logo, which wasn't introduced until 1956.

In telling their story to Ray Kroc, the McDonald brothers say they moved their restaurant from Arcadia to "the next town over." San Bernardino is 51 miles east of Arcadia.

When Michael Keaton (Ray Kroc) is signing contracts in the MacDonalds' lawyers office, a set of law books can be seen in the background. One of the volumes indicates the volumes are Federal Reporter, Second Series. One book is volume 434. This is a book of court decisions from 1970, approximately twenty years from the events depicted in the movie.

Ray is seen working for Prince Castle as a salesperson at the beginning in 1954, but the company wasn't founded until 1955.

Although set in the early 1950s, many of the buildings film flying flags are flying the modern 50 star version of today, which would not have come into existence until 1960 following the admission of Alaska and Hawaii as the 49th and 50th states.

When Ray is on the road near the beginning of the movie, he passes a sign that says "Chesterfield 5 miles." Attached to that is a US-61 route shield of the type not introduced until 1970.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. 2016, Starring Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander, Dan Fogler as Jacob Kowalski, Katherine Waterston as Porpentina "Tina" Goldstein, Alison Sudol as Queenie Goldstein, Ezra Miller as Credence Barebone, Samantha Morton as Mary Lou Barebone, Jon Voight as Henry Shaw Sr., Carmen Ejogo as Seraphina Picquery, Ron Perlman as Gnarlack, Colin Farrell as Percival Graves, Ronan Raftery as Langdon Shaw, Josh Cowdery as Henry Shaw Jr., Faith Wood-Blagrove as Modesty, Jenn Murray portrays Chastity Barebone, Johnny Depp as Percival Graves and Zoë Kravitz as Leta Lestrange. Movie Network, August 23, 2017. Soundtrack: "You're The Cream In My Coffee" - Performed by Ruth Etting; "Diga Diga Doo" - Performed by The Mills Brothers; "Blind Pig" - Written by J.K. Rowling and Mario Grigorov, Performed by Emmi; "Hedwig's Theme" - by John Williams. Anachronisms: 1. At the scene of a building collapse a cop tells the crowd it isn't a gas explosion because there is no smell of gas. But natural gas is both odorless and colorless, adding odor to the gas was globally adopted after the New London School explosion of 1937. So even if there had been a gas leak or explosion, the cop would not have been able to smell gas. 2. A theatre marquee advertises a show called TRIBECA FOLLIES. The neologism Tribeca (an acronym for Triangle Below Canal [Street]) was not coined until the 1970s. 3. When Newt is preparing to leave the ship at the beginning of the movie, an overhead shot shows a crowd of muddy footprints on the deck in front of him. All of these footprints seem to be from shoes with rubber treads, but such treads were not available until the late 1930s for mountain climbers and much later for everyday shoes. In the 1920s, all shoes would have had flat leather soles. 4. The torch of the Statue of Liberty is shown in its current design of gold covered copper. That version was installed in 1980. The original torch (currently on display in the museum) was a copper framework with glass and was illuminated from within, having been in that form since a major reworking in 1919. 5. When Newt first goes to the sisters' apartment, a record of Ruth Etting singing "You're the Cream in My Coffee" is playing. However, this song was not published until 1928, and Etting didn't record it until 1929---though the film is set in 1926. 6. When Senator Shaw is speaking at the dinner party, the US flag to his right has offset stars like the present 50 star flag has. In 1924 the flag was a 48 star flag where the stars were in even rows. 7. Every man in the movie wears a hat when outdoors (common dress for 1926), except for the three chief male characters - Newt Scamander, Jacob Kowalski, and Percival Graves, who never ever do. This is very uncommon for the year in which the film is set. 8. The light given off by street lights and automobile headlamps is a uniform bright white like that from a modern LED or halogen bulb. In 1926 these lights would have used incandescent bulbs whose light would be somewhat yellow in color and would vary in intensity from one fixture to another.

"Never Give Up" - Performed by Sia.
Anachronisms: 1. LED signboards on railway platforms never existed in 1986. 2. The train on which the young Saroo boards at Burhanpur station looking for Guddu is shown to have blue coaches. Express trains in India in the 1980s used maroon colored coaches. Blue liveried coaches were introduced only in the late 1990s. 3. Several classes of locomotives seen in the movie (the WAP-4 and WDG-4) were not in existence in 1986. 4. When Saroo is trapped on the train to Calcutta, he is briefly seen near an 'emergency' window with red grilles. Emergency windows were only installed on Indian trains post 2002. 5. Most trains shown in this movie are liveried in blue. However, around 1986, Indian passenger trains were predominantly painted maroon. The switch to blue only started in the late 90s. 6. The bus that zooms past Saroo in Calcutta while he is running away from his captors as well as buses shown in a later shot were not there in Calcutta in 1986. These models were introduced in the 2000s. 7. In 1987 when Saroo first arrives in Hobart, Australia on the journey home whilst he is looking out the window an image of a white 4WD with a red boat attached is shown. The car is an 80 series Toyota Land Cruiser. The 80 Series Land Cruiser did not begin production until 1990, three years after the supposed date.

Moonshine
Performed by Foy Vance feat. Kacey Musgraves
Written by Foy Vance
Produced by Blake Mills
Foy Vance appears courtesy of Gingerbread Man Records / Atlantic Records
Kacey Musgraves appears courtesy of Mercury Nashville. Anachronisms: 1. In the 1927 scene where Joe and Emma are in bed together talking you can hear the song Moonglow playing in the background. That tune wasn't written until 1933 and the recording they were using was Artie Shaw's arrangement from 1941. 2. At about 1:57:00 into the film, when Chris Cooper's character is sitting in his chair repeating the word "Repent", the camera pans past a picture of Jesus. That picture is called "The Head of Christ", or The Sallman Head", and was painted by artist Warner Sallman in 1940, well after the scene takes place. 3. In the opening sequence a photo is shown of a dead soldier with a bloody face. Affleck' s character fought in WW1. The photo of the soldier is from the Civil War. 4. Joe's father says that one of the policemen who fell in the lake died "of hypothermia". This is a technical term which never became well-known to the public until the last quarter of the twentieth century. In 1920, he might have said "of exposure" or even "of the cold". 5. The song "Sugartime" wasn't written or published until 1958. The song was sung by main character "sugar in the morning" in one scene.
