Trivia: It is an American science fiction film directed by Ridley Scott and starring Matt Damon. The film is based on Andy Weir's 2011 novel The Martian, which was adapted into a screenplay by Drew Goddard. Damon stars as an astronaut who is incorrectly presumed dead and left behind on the planet Mars, and who then fights to survive. Theme: According to Scott the film is about how no one is ever alone. Filming began in November 2014 and lasted approximately 70 days. Around 20 sets were built on a sound stage in Budapest, Hungary, one of the largest in the world. Wadi Rum in Jordan was also used as a practical backdrop for filming. Filming locations: Wadi Rum, Jordan; Budapest, Hungary; Korda Studios, Etyek, Hungary (studio); Budaörs Airport, Budapest, Hungary; Jordan; Hungary.
References: 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) - The scene of one of the crew members running in space is visually reminiscent of the running scene in 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Alien (1979).
In the novel, Mark Watley says "It's true, you know. In space, no one can hear you scream like a little girl." referring to that famous tag line used to promote the film Alien (1979). The Martian (2015)'s director, Ridley Scott, directed Alien (1979).
Apollo 13 (1995)
The crew of the Hermes sends a message back to Mission Control that "Rich Purnell is a steely-eyed missile man," a quote directly from Apollo 13.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
A meeting is referred to as "The Council of Elrond", and Sean Bean is in the meeting in both movies.
Iron Man (2008)
Mark jokes that he wants to "fly around like Iron Man" after leaving his capsule.
The Egg (2015) (Short) - Title is referenced.
Features: Happy Days (1974) (TV Series) - Mark Watney is shown watching an episode. A brief clip of the title sequence is shown.
During the first half of the ending credits, the names of the cast members (with the exception of Matt Damon) corresponds with their character in the film.
The film was shot in Wadi Rum, Jordan, which has a red coloured desert, the same location where another Mars mission film, Red Planet (2000), was shot.
Matt Damon plays a character named Mark Watney. "Mark" is the English version of the Latin name "Marcus," which means "of Mars."
This is the second movie containing the word 'Martian' in the title and starring Jeff Daniels. The first one was My Favorite Martian (1999).
Early in the movie a view of the Johnson Space Center in Houston is shown with the Vertical Assembly Building in the background, which is actually at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
Quote: Mark Watney: "They say once you grow crops somewhere, you have officially colonized it. So, technically, I colonized Mars. In your face, Neil Armstrong!"

"Smells Like Teen Spirit" - Written by Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl, Performed by Nirvana, Courtesy of Geffen Records Under License, From Universal Music Enterprises. Trivia: It is a documentary film about Nirvana front man and '90s rock icon Kurt Cobain, which premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. It has received a limited theatrical release worldwide and premiered on television in the United States on HBO on May 4, 2015. The film was met with an overwhelming positive response from critics, many of whom noted that the humanized portrayal of Cobain distinguished the film from prior works on the same subject. References: Batman (1966) (TV Series) - Young Kurt is seen in a 60s-style Batman costume, in a home movie; Wayne's World (1992) - Kurt imitates Garth, wearing a long blond wig and says "Party on, Wayne" while rolling around backstage in a wheelchair before a show. Features: Over the Edge (1979) - Several clips are shown because, as Kurt Cobain says, "it had such an effect on me." According to a interview in Rolling Stone, director Brett Morgan planned on including Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl in the film, but Grohl was busy filming Sonic Highways. By the time Grohl was available Morgan was satisfied with his cut of the film and decided not to include him. The name Fecal Matter is seen briefly. This was the original name of Nirvana before it was known as Nirvana. According to a Vanity Fair interview with Director Brett Morgen, after Frances Bean Cobain saw the film at it's Sundance premiere, Morgen escorted her back to her car. Before leaving, Cobain embraced Morgen and said, "You made the film I wanted to see." Courtney Love hasn't had a say in the final cut.
The animation sequences incorrectly depict Kurt as right-handed.

Trivia: It is an English-language French-Canadian action crime thriller film starring Paul Walker, David Belle and RZA. The film was directed by Camille Delamarre and written by Luc Besson, Robert Mark Kamen and Bibi Naceri. It is a remake of the 2004 French film District 13, in which Belle had also starred. Brick Mansions was released on April 25, 2014, five months after Paul Walker's death on November 30, 2013 and has a dedication to him at the start of the credits. This is Walker's last completed film before his death but not his last film appearance. At the time of his death, he was almost done filming Furious 7 which was released on April 3, 2015. Filming locations: Montréal, Québec, Canada; Detroit, Michigan, USA.
This film is a remake of the French film "District B13" which stars David Belle in the same role as in this movie.
Paul Walker's last fully completed performance (although his final film performance was in Fast & Furious 7 which he was filming at the time of his death).
Tremain AKA RZA tells Damian and Leno that "Cash rules everything around me." Which is the title to a hit song by the Wu-Tang Clan which RZA was a member of.
The Gate 38 location was also used in Death Race (2008) as a part of the race track.
Paul Walker starred in "Running Scared" (2006) as an undercover cop. The same role he played in "Brick Mansions" (2014). It's also the role he played in "The Fast and the Furious" (2001) as Brian O'Connor.
RZA's character is described as ruling Brick Mansions "with an iron fist"--an in-joke reference to his previous film, "The Man With The Iron Fists."
During the opening chase scene when Lino runs into the kids bedroom you can see a poster that says Wu Tang. RZA who plays Tremaine is a member of the rap group Wu Tang Clan.
When Paul Walker tell's David Belle to Buckle up, he replies with, "I'd rather be free". A nod to Parkour also being known as Free Running.
On the final scene with the rocket, there is a symbol for the Chicago Bears football team emblazoned on the rocket.
The rocket has the name "Bear Claw" written on it in Russian. The Chicago Bears logo is also stamped on it.
Officer Damien Collier's badge number is 313, which is also the telephone area code for the city of Detroit.
The code of "48216" thought to disarm the NAB (Neutron Assisted Device)is an actual United State Postal Service zip code for the city of Detroit Michigan.
In the scene right before Tremaine talks to Lola, the letters "RS" can be seen spray painted on a water tower. Paul Walker played the lead role in a film with the same letters - film "Running Scared" (2006). Quotes: 1. Tremaine Alexander: "Sometimes you don't gotta be a rocket scientist. You just gotta have a rocket." 2. Damien Collier: "Count3". Lino: "3".

Trivia: Adaptation of Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town, a sequence of stories by Stephen Leacock, first published in 1912. It is generally considered to be one of the most enduring classics of Canadian humorous literature. The fictional setting for these stories is Mariposa, a small town on the shore of Lake Wissanotti, but drawn from Leacock's experiences in Orillia, Ontario.
Directed by Don McBrearty. Writing Credits: Stephen Leacock - book; Malcolm MacRury - screenplay.

Geddy Lee of the Canadian rock band Rush, plays "Fred", the barber shop customer whose face is covered by a hot towel during the entire film. Lee gets up and reveals himself after the closing credits.
Near the end, the elder Stephen Leacock looks at the younger Stephen Leacock and calls him "the boy I left behind me". ''The Boy I Left Behind Me'' was the title of his childhood memoirs, published posthumously in 1946.
The song "There Will Be a Happy Meeting in Glory" plays over the opening credits. This piece of music is best known in Canada for being the opening theme to the popular CBC Radio variety program "The Vinyl Café".

Trivia: It is an American biographical film directed by Tim Burton, starring Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz. The script was written by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski. The film is about the life of American artist Margaret Keane—famous for drawing portraits and paintings with big eyes. It followed the story of Margaret and her husband, Walter Keane, who took credit for Margaret's phenomenally successful and popular paintings in the 1950s and 1960s, and the lawsuit (and trial) between Margaret and Walter, after Margaret reveals she is the real artist behind the big eyes paintings. Big Eyes had its world premiere in New York City on December 15, 2014. It was released in theatre on December 25, 2014 in the U.S. by The Weinstein Company.[5] The film was met with positive reviews, praising the performances of both Adams and Waltz. Adams won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical and was nominated for a BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role. Waltz was also nominated for a Golden Globe Award for his performance and Lana Del Rey received a Golden Globe nomination for the film's theme song "Big Eyes".

When Margaret and Walter are painting in front of the San Francisco palace of Fine Arts, the real Margaret Keane can be seen reading a book on the park bench behind them.

Amy Adams liked the script when it was offered to her at first, but she originally turned down the role, because the character lacked "a stronger sense of self". However, working on American Hustle (2013) gave Adams a new perspective of the character, and she was won over because she was intrigued by the character's "quiet dignity", while the relationship between the mother and the daughter spoke to her as well.

The UNICEF painting that Keane painted for the '64 Worlds Fair, titled Tomorrow Forever, was never actually mounted in the Hall of Education. Robert Moses, who had control over everything that was included in the fair, hated it. Once the NY Times critic Canady trashed it (after seeing a photograph of the artwork) Moses had it thrown into the garbage.

In the opening scenes of the film, Amy Adams character is seen driving her car on a winding road. It goes up a hill towards an obvious matte painting at the top (that doesn't exist in reality.) Within 20 seconds, she is shown driving down the very same "winding hill" that now has a new matte painting at its top, but with different added trees and shrubbery and is shot at a slightly different angle to create the illusion that this is a completely different place, but that she is still driving away from her original location.
The production budget, according to the producers at the Los Angeles screening, was $60 million.

The hungry i was one of San Francisco's most influential nightclubs in the 1950s. Originally located at 599 Jackson Street, the owner closed it in the mid-60s due to declining revenue. The rights to the name were purchased by a topless club on Broadway.

A subtle Andy Warhol reference is included in the supermarket scene when Margaret picks up a Campbells soup can and adds it to her shopping cart.

As a whole, the project took 11 years to be made.
Amy Adams portrayed Lois Lane in the 2013 Man of Steel. Terence Stamp who portrays the New York Times art critic in Big Eyes had previously portrayed General Zod in 1980's Superman II.
The establishing shot of the courthouse shows the famous gold-leaf statue of Kamehameha the Great, the first monarch of the Kingdom of Hawai'i. The building behind the statue is Ali'iolani Hale ("House of the Heavenly King"), home of the Hawai'i State Supreme Court.
When Margaret is upstairs painting alone in a small room, hiding her work from her daughter, Walter comes up and Margaret states she's a bit light headed from the turpentine. As she paints in acrylics and not oils (as is previously indicated in a prior scene) she wouldn't use turpentine as acrylics are water soluble. This mistake is repeated when Walter states "Keanes bleed oil" to a reporter.
The picture that Margaret paints in the courtroom as proof of her artistic authorship matches the one that was created by the real Margaret Keane for the same purpose.
When Margaret is in the supermarket, she takes the famous "Campbell Soup", subject of the most famous print by Andy Warhol, just before she recognizes that her art is being reproduced on posters and postcards.
Just as Margaret recognizes when she discovers that even his Paris paintings are fake, we never physically see Walter actually paint. The most we see is of him adding one or two brush strokes to one of Margaret's own works.
Walter's alter ego as S. Cenic actually describes the paintings he claimed as his own as "scenic."
Anachronisms: 1. Most of the Checker Taxicabs featured in the film are anachronistic. They feature the large aluminum bumpers that were only introduced after 1973. 2. An early scene shows Margaret and Walter painting a landscape in San Francisco at the beautiful Palace of Fine Arts building. However, in the 1950s the 1915 constructed Palace had not yet been restored and was in a crumbling state of ruins and fenced off and not visible to the public. It wasn't until the late 1960s that the palace was restored to its original beauty. 3. When Margaret is walking around the supermarket with the display of the copies of her work for sale many of the products on the shelves (Campbell's Soup, Jiffy baking mixes, etc) are shown with contemporary packaging rather than the packaging of the 1960s. 4. In an early scene where Margaret first appears in North Beach, a curb ramp can be seen on the sidewalk at Bannam Place and Green Street. Curb ramps did not exist in San Francisco in the 1950s. 5. At the jazz club, the owner says, "Give it up for..." This is a more modern expression that originated in 1990, not in the 1960s when the scene takes place. 6. Margaret's daughter Jane rides in the back seat of the car. What kid in the 50's and 60's would ride in the back seat when there was a perfectly good front seat available? It is only the modern nanny state that recommends children ride in the back seat "for their safety". 7. When Margaret is in the grocery store and sees mass produced Keane paintings, the shelves of foot powder behind her are in modern rounded plastic containers. The film is set in the late 50s-early 60s. Plastic body powder containers would not be marketed for thirty more years. The containers would be metal. Additionally, the JIffy and C&H sugar logos on the cornbread and sugar boxes are modern logos and not logos that would have existed in the 50s and 60s. 8. When Margaret is walking around the supermarket the product prices shown are too high; in the early 1960s, canned goods especially would have been half (or less) than the costs shown.

Trivia: It is an American–Australian space opera film written, produced, and directed by Lana and Andy Wachowski. Starring Mila Kunis, Channing Tatum, Sean Bean and Eddie Redmayne, the film is centered on Jupiter Jones (Kunis), an ordinary cleaning woman, and Caine Wise (Tatum), an interplanetary warrior who informs Jones that her destiny extends beyond Earth. Supporting cast member Douglas Booth has described the film's fictional universe as a cross between The Matrix and Star Wars, while Kunis named indulgence and consumerism as its underlying themes. Although critics praised the visuals, world-building, Michael Giacchino's musical score, and originality, the general attitude toward the film was negative, with most criticism focused on incoherence in the screenplay and an over-reliance on special effects. Despite this, the film has found a more positive response, particularly among a niche of female science fiction fans who appreciate the film's campiness, and that the film deviates from typical gender norms in a genre that is traditionally male-centric. Channing Tatum had to wear a mouthpiece to change the shape of his lower jaw to realistically portray a part-canine character. This unfortunately prevented him from closing his mouth and gave him trouble when he had to talk.

The Last House on the Left (1972) - mentioned by Diane
Rocky (1976) - In the diner scene, Paul tells Diane and Steve it's one of his favorite movies.
Stalker (1979) - Resemblance in the "rain walking scene" as seen early in the trailer and during the first half of the movie. The scene occurs in Stalker during the temple scenes.
Rocky III (1982) - In the diner scene, Paul says he loves Eye of the Tiger and has seen the movie (implying Rocky III) several times.
Scarface (1983) - mentioned by Paul
Home Alone (1990) - Steve slaps his cheeks in the bathroom and then screams, like Kevin in the bathroom scene. Also, later in the movie, Diane walks on the street and her bag full of groceries rips open, similar to what happens to Kevin.
The film is presented in an unheard-of 1:1 aspect ratio; the "viewing area" of the screen is a perfect square.

When Diane, Steve, and Kyla are having dinner, Steve tells a story about how when he was little and his parents didn't want him to understand their conversations, they would speak in English. Steve says that most conversations ended with either "shut up" or "f*** off." He then says that he tried to befriend a little girl who spoke English by telling her to "shut up" and "f*** off," because those were the only English phrases he knew, and he didn't know what that meant. In the DVD commentary, Anne Dorval actually admits that this is her own personal experience from when she was little, and that she told a neighborhood child to "shut up." Xavier Dolan thought her story was funny and decided to put it into the movie.

As of 2014, this is Xavier Dolans highest rated film.
Except for the hopeful moments (where the screen is widened), the film is presented in an unheard-of 1:1 aspect ratio; the "viewing area" of the screen is a perfect square. Xavier Dolan said the reason is that he wanted to amplify the emotions from the characters. Quotes: 1. Steve Després: "We still love each other, right?" Diane 'Die' Després: "That's what we're best at, buddy." 2. Kyla: Loving people doesn't save them."
