Trivia: 1. Written and directed by Terrence Malick with experimental elements. Malick's film chronicles the origins and meaning of life by way of a middle-aged man's childhood memories of his family living in 1950s Texas, interspersed with imagery of the origins of the universe and the inception of life on Earth. 2. After several years in development and missing 2009 and 2010 release dates, the film premiered in competition at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Palme d'Or. 3. The film received widespread critical acclaim, but also polarizing responses to Malick's use of technical and artistic imagery, directorial style, and fragmented non-linear narrative. 4. The tree of life that appears in the film is a gargantuan 65000-pound live-oak tree situated at Smithville, Texas. 5. Some American theaters set up signs - warning moviegoers about the enigmatic and non-linear narrative of the movie - following some confused walkouts and refund demands in the opening weeks. 5. In August 2011, Sean Penn gave an interview to the French publication "Le Figaro" in which he was very critical of the movie and Terrence Malick's direction. Penn said "I didn't at all find on the screen the emotion of the script, which is the most magnificent one that I've ever read. A clearer and more conventional narrative would have helped the film without, in my opinion, lessening its beauty and its impact. Frankly, I'm still trying to figure out what I'm doing there and what I was supposed to add in that context. What's more, Terry himself never managed to explain it to me clearly." 6. Jack O'Brien's initials are J-O-B. In the Bible, Job was a man tested by God after Satan wagers Job only serves God because of His protection. After losing his wealth, family and health, Job would rather curse himself than God. A passage from the Book of Job, "Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation... while the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy?", is used to open The Tree of Life. Quote: Prologue: [on screen, unspoken] "Where were you when I laid the foundations of the Earth, when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?" Job 38:4,7. Anachronisms: 1. Mrs. O'Brien's dish-washing liquid comes in a clear plastic container, that was invented after the 1950s. 2. The O'Briens have a fancy ceiling fan-with-lights-attached in their lounge room; these were not available in the 1950s.

Storyline: A gardener in East L.A. struggles to keep his son away from gangs and immigration agents while trying to give his son the opportunities he never had. Trivia: 1. Star Demián Bichir was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor. 2. This film is unique among Hollywood productions in that it is set in a Hispanic community and features an almost entirely Hispanic cast. 3. Director Chris Weitz uses A Better Life to explore the culture and geography of Los Angeles. The language of the script was modified to reflect the actual slang used in Los Angeles, even reflecting linguistic differences from street-to-street. 4. Director Chris Weitz liked to do all the dangerous scenes in the script before he asked his cast to perform them. A stunt double taught Weitz and Demián Bichir how to climb a palm tree, and although Weitz was first to successfully climb one, Bichir did go on to film all the scenes himself, without a stunt double. Weitz told the audience at a SAG Screening: "That is why in my films there are not many scenes that require stunt doubles".

The film was shot over a short period of time in January 1956 to capitalize on Haley's success and the popularity of his multimillion-selling recording "Rock Around the Clock" that debuted in the 1955 teen flick Blackboard Jungle, and is considered the first major rock and roll musical film. 4. Rock Around the Clock tells a highly fictionalized rendition of how rock and roll was discovered, but moviegoers didn't care about the plotline; they wanted to hear the music. 5. The film was blamed for inciting rowdy behavior in theaters across America and Great Britain, and was banned in some parts of the world. 6. The movie advanced the cause of integration by showing white musicians performing on the same venue as black performers. 7. The film is directed by Rob Reiner about the fictional heavy metal band Spinal Tap. There is no actual "Isle of Lucy" in the United Kingdom off England's coast, where Spinal Tap supposedly played a blues/jazz or jazz/blues festival. In one of the most subtle and overlooked gags of the film, they are really just paying homage to the classic television show, I Love Lucy. 11. "Shakin' All Over" is a rock and roll song originally performed by the English band, Johnny Kidd and the Pirates. It was written by frontman Johnny Kidd and reached #1 in the United Kingdom in August 1960. Kidd was quoted as saying: "When I was going round with a bunch of lads and we happened to see a girl who was a real sizzler we used to say that she gave us 'quivers down the membranes'. It was a standard saying with us referring to any attractive girl…..I can honestly say that it was this more than anything that inspired me to write 'Shakin' All Over'." The original recording was not a hit outside of Europe. Instead, "Shakin' All Over" gained fame in North America after the Canadian band The Guess Who covered it in early 1965, where it became a #1 hit in Canada, and a #22 hit in the US. The Guess Who had previously been known as "Chad Allan and the Expressions" prior to the release of "Shakin' All Over", but the group's Canadian label (Quality Records) issued the record as by "Guess Who?", in an attempt to imply that the record might be by a British Invasion act, perhaps even The Beatles. The group subsequently permanently changed their name to The Guess Who, and went on to a long Top 40 career. Even after Quality Records revealed the band was "really" Chad Allan & The Expressions, disc jockeys still announced the group as Guess Who?, effectively forcing the band to rename themselves. So although singles were issued as being by "Guess Who?" on their first two albums, the band was credited as both "Guess Who?" and "Chad Allan & The Expressions". The Guess Who started out as a local Winnipeg, Manitoba band formed by singer/guitarist Chad Allan in 1958 and initially called Al and the Silvertones. This was changed to Chad Allan & the Reflections by 1962, by which point the band consisted of Chad Allan (vocals/guitar), Bob Ashley (keyboards), Randy Bachman (guitars), Jim Kale (bass), and Garry Peterson (drums). The Reflections name was chosen since it was similar to the British group The Shadows, which was one of the band's biggest influences. All the band members were born in Winnipeg. The band's debut single ("Tribute To Buddy Holly") was released on Canadian-American Records in 1962. Chad Allan and the Reflections then signed with Quality Records and released several flop singles in 1963/1964, including one mis-credited to Bob Ashley & The Reflections. By 1965, the group was forced to change its name to Chad Allan & the Expressions after a U.S. group called The Reflections had scored a hit with "Just Like Romeo & Juliet". It was at this point that the band scored their first hit, a 1965 rendition of Johnny Kidd & The Pirates' "Shakin' All Over". This track reached #1 in Canada, #22 in the U.S (where Quality had licensed the track to the American Scepter label for release in the U.S.), and #27 in Australia. The immediate follow-ups to "Shakin' All Over" met with major success in Canada but very little success elsewhere. After Bob Ashley left the group in late 1965, Burton Cummings joined the band as keyboardist and co-lead vocalist (with Chad Allan) in early January 1966. This line-up only lasted for a few months before Chad Allan left, making Cummings the new full-time lead singer. By this point, the band's name had become "The Guess Who?" (the question mark would finally be dropped in 1968) and with Chad Allan gone, the "Chad Allan & The Expressions" subtitle was dropped once and for all. By the beginning of the 1970s, The Guess Who moved toward an edgier hard-rock sound with the album American Woman, the title track for which, "American Woman" (coupled with its B-side "No Sugar Tonight") was the group's only No. 1 hit in the U.S. Bachman left the group after playing one final show with them at the Fillmore East in New York City on May 16, 1970. He returned to Winnipeg and later formed the hugely successful band Bachman–Turner Overdrive, with its signature hit "Takin' Care of Business". The Guess Who broke up in October 1975 and Cummings then went on to forge his own successful solo career. In 1983, Bachman, Cummings, Jim Kale and Garry Peterson (the "American Woman" line-up) reunited as The Guess Who to play a series of Canadian gigs and record the Together Again live album and video. My wife, Connie Luther and I were able to attend the Guess Who concert at the Centre of the Arts in Regina, Saskatchewan in May that year. My wife and I agree that it was quite possibly the best music concert we have ever witnessed, with the band playing all of their old hit songs. ("Takin' Care of Business" - The song was used in an episode of The Simpsons, "Saddlesore Galactica". Homer Simpson is shown at a B.T.O. concert, demanding that the band play the song. The band starts the song and Homer then yells, "Get to the 'workin' overtime' part!" The band obliges, skipping straight to the chorus. Later, just after finishing 'You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet', Homer requests that they sing it: when Bachman claims that they just did, Homer replies with a drawn-out 'What-everrr!' Trivia: 1. Though primarily set in both cities, Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Chicago, Illinois, which are about a two hour drive apart, principal photography actually took place in Los Angeles, California. There is these two disparate worlds: There was Annie's world in Milwaukee, and then there was Helen's world in Chicago. It immediately draws this dichotomy between the rivalry that developed between them. The plot of the film bears a striking resemblance to a real-life bank heist gone wrong. On August 28, 2003, pizza delivery man Brian Douglas Wells entered a bank in Erie, Pennsylvania with a bomb strapped to his neck. As police approached Wells, the bomb detonated, killing him. Wells had similar motives and was surrounded with people who strongly resemble characters depicted in the motion picture.
