Trivia: Filmed in Wilmington, North Carolina. 

Anachronisms:  

The movie takes place in 1978, but we see the completed Wells Fargo Center in the opening credits. However, it wasn't fully built until 1983.

Finney uses what appears to be an LED flashlight during his captivity. These would not have been available in the late 70s and were not common until the 21st century.

The opening scene in 1978 shows a guy at the kid's ballgame opening a can of Coors using a pull tab. In 1978 Coors wasn't using pull tabs but instead used it's own unique two hole push-in style opening system.

When Vance hopper is playing pinball and someone is thrown into a magazine rack, there are 4 Starlog issues seen on the magazine rack. The first one from the top is Number 17 from October 1978 the year the movie takes place. But the next three issues are Number 27 from October 1979, Number 28 from November 79 and the bottom issue is Number 31 from February 1980.

Finns flashlight is obviously an LED, which weren't available until early 2000's.

When the father of Finney is shown reading The Rocky Mountain News, the paper is printed in broadsheet style. This is incorrect, in 1978, that newspaper was printed in tabloid format.

Anachronisms: 

The prologue, set in the Cretaceous, depicts a Giganotosaurus fighting with and killing a Tyrannosaurus (who turns out to be the genetic blueprint for Rexy). Both creatures lived in separate continents and in different time periods. There were not even similar creatures to either that coexisted. The relatives of Giganotosaurus (and Allosaurus) went extinct in North America before the ancestors of Tyrannosaurs (which were the size of a raptor at that time) were able to grow into Tyrannosaurus-like size.

Dimetrodon lived during the Permian period which didn't have mosquitoes.

Anachronisms:  

Pádraic says that someone needs "tough love". This concept was generated by Bill Milliken's 1968 book of the same name; it would not make much sense in 1923.

The islanders walk past a large public statue of the Virgin Mary on the way to Mass. However, in Ireland, almost all such statues were erected in the "Marian year" of 1954, or at a later date, and would not have been there in 1923.

The main characters use the term "it takes two to tango", which was originated much later in 1952, in a popular song interpreted by Pearl Bailey. However, the movie takes place in 1923 many years before the term.

In the first scene in Colm's cottage, an old phonograph with a horn is seen, and heard playing a record. The record is spinning at 33 1/3 RPM, instead of 78 RPM, which was the ONLY speed used to play records in the early 1920's. The slower speed was not used until LP records were introduced in the late 1940s.

When Pádraic lights the oil lamps, before setting Colm's house on fire, he uses a Zippo lighter. These weren't invented until 1932, 9 years after the 1923 time-frame of the film.

Anachronisms: 

When Will first visits April in her apartment during the Bill Clinton 1992 New York primary campaign, April plays "In Spite Of Me" by Morphine (followed by Nirvana's "Come As You Are"). "In Spite Of Me" wasn't released until Morphine's September 1993 album Cure For Pain.

The cell phone number that Emily gives Will at Summer's party has a 212 area code. At that time, the 212 area code was for NYC land lines only.

When Will is talking to Hampton, the bookshelf behind Will has a hardcover copy of David McCullough's "Truman" on it, which wasn't published until June 1992.

In a scene just after the 15 minute mark, when Ryan Reynolds' character first arrives in New York in 1991, as he passes by the TGI Friday's on Eighth Avenue, a white Mercedes-Benz CLK convertible (W209 model) drives by, which could have been manufactured no earlier than 2003.

When Summer tries to sober up Will in 1991 (he's working on the first Bill Clinton campaign), she gives him a modern style bottled water - which was not available in 1991.

The divorce papers are dated October 14, 2008, and the envelope is marked as being delivered on October 17, 2008. The film was released eight months prior on February 14, 2008.
