Trivia: 1. Directed by Clint Eastwood, focusing on the career of FBI director J. Edgar Hoover from the Palmer Raids onwards, including an examination of his private life. 2. Charlize Theron, who was originally rumored to be playing Helen Gandy, dropped out of the project to do Snow White & the Huntsman and Eastwood considered Amy Adams before finally selecting Naomi Watts as Theron's replacement. Anachronisms: 1. After Emma Goldman's 1919 trial, reporters start shooting photos using flash bulbs. They were not in general-use for photography until 1925. 2. Hoover and Tolson are in Del Mar, and gossip about having seen Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball together at the racetrack before the two had even met. Lucy and Desi did indeed have a home in Del Mar, but not for 20 years after the time of this scene. Furthermore, they gossip about Lucy's fake red hair - she was not a redhead until 1943, having brown or dark blonde hair during most of the 1930s. Additionally, Hoover refers to her hair as "ginger"--a British slang term unknown in the U.S. in the 1930s. 3. Emma Goldman is interrogated in a scene early in the film, set in lower Manhattan in 1919 or 1920. Through a window, we see the Statue of Liberty to the right, and the Verrazano Narrows bridge to the left. This bridge was not built until the mid 1960s. 4. During telephone conversations, the corded handsets had a modular jack. These modular jacks did not become popular until the late 70's through the 80's. Until then the hand sets were hard wired directly to the telephone base. 5. Several times during the movie, J. Edgar receives shot in his arm. The injection plunger is clearly a modern plastic. Glass and stainless steel injection syringes were common at the time. 6. Tolson tells Hoover that firing Purvis would be "a P.R. disaster." The use of "P.R." to mean "public relations" was unknown in the 1930s. 7. When Hoover and Tolson attend the premiere of "G-Men," it is projected in the modern "flat" ratio of 1.85:1 instead of the correct Academy ratio of 1.33:1. 7. In one scene set in the 1930s the Federal income tax department is referred to as the IRS. The name "Internal Revenue Service" was only given to that department in the 1950s. Previously it was called the Bureau of Internal Revenue. 8. As the 1933 Inauguration parade passes by Hoover's office in the background, outside his window, is the National Archives building. Its cornerstone had been laid, at most, one month earlier in February 1933 and the building was not completed until late 1935. 9. Hoover tells Tolson they're going to Del Mar. But the scene is set in 1934, before the Lindbergh baby is found and before Del Mar actually opened, in 1937.

Trivia: 1. Comedy released by THINKFilm, first screened at the Sundance Film Festival. The film, a prequel to the television show, was completed in 2004 and acquired by Warner Independent at Sundance in 2005, but release of the film was delayed due to legal clearance issues. Amy Sedaris, Stephen Colbert, and Paul Dinello reprised their roles for the film; several other characters were recast. In addition to acting, Colbert is a co-producer and Dinello is a director for the film. Worldwide Pants, a production company owned by comedian David Letterman, was also a producer. This is the company's first feature film production. 2. Characters not returning: (a) Orlando Pabotoy looked too old to reprise his series role as Orlando Pinatubo. His character was then replaced by the similar Megawatti Sukarnoputri. (b) Larc Spies did not return for the role of Derrick Blank because, according to Sedaris, "he looks like a longshoreman now." Several other characters were recast because the original actors looked too old to believably play high schoolers. The only original student to return was Maria Thayer as redhead Tammi Littlenut. (c) Roberto Gari did not reprise the role of Guy Blank, who was instead portrayed by Dan Hedaya. Hedaya portrayed Guy's character differently than Gari; on the television show, A 'healthy' Guy is frozen in humorous, almost statuesque states, whereas in the film Hedaya's Guy is simply unconscious. 3. The pinup model in Jerri's locker is Amy Sedaris. Sedaris also played the cocktail waitress in the "Teacher's Lounge" scene. Storyline: A young lawyer travels to a remote village where he discovers the vengeful ghost of a scorned woman is terrorizing the locals. Anachronisms: 1. In the last scene, the train has a post-grouping (1923) Class G headcode (light loco), but it should have a pre-grouping Class A (express passenger) headcode. 2. Kipps travels by train, with Antimacassars showing N&CR. This can only be Newcastle & Carlisle Railway, but this was absorbed into the NER in 1862, 40 years before the film's setting. Also, the locomotive is a Southern U class, which did not venture that far north.

Location filming was done in Bavaria with indoor shooting at Studio Babelsberg. 2. At the beginning of the movie, the map of Europe shows several states and kingdoms of that era. However, in Germany, a fictional kingdom west of Bavaria called "Wurzburg" is shown (slightly misspelled, as the original spelling is "Würzburg"), the name of a Franconian city where major parts of the movie were shot. 3. The substitute for Versailles in the movie is a German palace, the Fürstbischöfliche Residenz (the prince-bishop's palace) in Würzburg, Lower Franconia, Bavaria. Anachronisms: 1. Although the airships are spectacular, in reality they would never get off the ground due to their weight. Airships had to be of very light construction to fly (no cannons, etc.) The airships in the film were lifted by streamlined hot air balloons, so fire did not present the issues that Hydrogen would have. 2. The Cardinal and Milady are having a discussion in the Hall of Mirrors located in the Palace of Versailles. Versailles is outside of Paris and the hall of mirrors wasn't constructed until the third building campaign of the palace starting in 1678 by King Louis XIV. 3. In the ball scene, when the musicians are tuning their instruments, they are using Tourte bows, a style of bow that was not created until the late 1700s, significantly after the movie takes place. 4. The Spire on top of Notre Dame which impales one of the airships, was not built until the 1800s. The Church was restored starting in 1845 lasting 23 years, it was during this time that the Spire was added to the building.
